President’s Message
From Jim Tunney, NFL Hall of Fame Referee:
“If it bleeds, it leads!” a TV anchor told me when I asked why television newscasts highlight negative news more than positive things going on in sports, schools, and community. So I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at the controversy coming out of Torino, Italy, site of the XX Winter Olympic Games surrounding Shani Davis and Chad Hedrick.
Davis and Hedrick are both speed skaters on the US team. The controversy broke out in the 1000-meter event. Davis won that race, yet felt “slighted” that Hedrick, the USA captain, didn’t “approach me to shake my hand. I shook his hand and hugged him when he won the 5000 meters, he should have done the same for me.”
Who’s right – or wrong? Both made mistakes in this matter. Hedrick, as Captain, needed to put aside any negative feelings and put the welfare of this teammate (Davis), and the best interests of the Team ahead of any personal disappointment. Davis, on the other hand, needed to not make an issue of the ‘slighting’ and be proud of his accomplishments. To their credit, in later interviews, they both wanted to put this incident behind them and move on. Racism was not an issue. The media, on the other hand, kept hammering on the controversy.
Of course one is proud to “win the gold” for his/her country, but disagreements often occur in the heat of competition.
As an Olympian, I know what dedication it takes to make the Olympic team in any sport! Congratulations to all who gave their all!

Last Week’s Program – New Member Bios
We’re always entertained by time spent getting to know new club members.  Last week was no exception, as we heard from Barry Smith and Sharon Banks.
Barry, who has 8 bosses at the law firm of Thorp Purdy Jewett in Springfield, is originally from Colorado, though he was raised a Cornhusker from Nebraska.  He has two brothers and one sister; his parents now live in Battleground, WA.  Barry received his law degree from the UO School of Law.  He participates in all kinds of sports, and enjoys playing chess.  His girlfriend of eight years lives in Salem.
Sharon describes herself as mother, wife, soldier, and manager, and can rightfully be addressed as Major Banks, as she has earned that rank in the Army National Guard, Transportation Corps.  As Manager of Administration and Planning at Lane Regional Air Pollution Authority, Sharon works on projects that help to reduce emissions and is most proud of the “Everybody Wins” program.  The program will upgrade 350 truck & trailer rigs with a little engine that provides power for lights, heat, etc., in the cabs of these rigs, saving 2,000 gallons/year of diesel fuel.
Sharon and her husband, Woody, a retired civil engineer, employ sustainable forestry practices on the tree farm where they built their dream house in 2001.  They have three grown children, and a ten-year old, Morgan, still at home.
In light of her career, Sharon thinks it’s not a coincidence that she and Rudolph Diesel share the same birthday.
We’re pleased to welcome these two new members!

Outbound Teams Forming!
Recruiting is open for two outbound Group Study Exchange teams, one to India and the other to Bolivia. The India team will travel Dec. 20, 2006 thru Jan. 21, 2007. The Bolivia team trip has not yet been scheduled but will be in the spring of 2007.
GSE information can be found at rotary.org under The Rotary Foundation, Educational Programs, Group Study Exchange. All information and applications can be downloaded and printed there.
Team Leaders for both teams will be interviewed on Sunday, May 7th, after the District Conference in Florence. Team Members for the India Team will tentatively be interviewed May 20th in Roseburg. If we have enough applications for the Bolivia Team, we will interview them on the 20th also.  Contact Don Arkell, if you think you’d like to be part of a team at darkell@centurytel.net.

Quote of the Day

“Vision is not enough; it must be combined with venture. It is not enough to stare up the steps; we must step up the stairs.”                                          – Vaclav Havel
