MAKE DREAMS REAL

President’s Message

July 16, 2008

I must confess that I have not always read my copy of The Rotarian magazine very carefully over the years.  However, as I was reading the latest edition I was reminded of one of the main reasons I am proud to be a Rotarian—the fight to eradicate polio in our world.

Maybe it’s such a big deal to me because I remember the efforts that our country made when I was growing up in the early 60’s.  Our whole community would report to South Eugene High School and get our sugar cube with the vaccination.  I loved it because the development of the oral Salk vaccine meant I didn’t have to get a shot!

While we are fortunate that the efforts of our national and local leaders made polio a memory in our nation, not everyone was as lucky.  The disease of polio continued to attack people in other parts of the globe.  While there are always issues for world leaders to worry about, I am impressed that International Rotary is coming close to doing what all the governments were not able to - eradicate the disease of polio.  The Rotarian magazine described how the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, working with the World Health Organization and The Rotary Foundation, had begun to honor their $100 million challenge grant with the first payment of $40 million to begin immunizations in the four countries that still have polio—Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan.

District Governor 2008-2009

Governor’s Message

Fellow Rotarians,

Thank you for giving me the opportunity
to serve you as your District Governor for
2008-2009.  This is an exciting time as we
begin a new year in Rotary.

DG Mike Fischnaller

As you know, International President D. K. Lee has chosen the theme of MAKE DREAMS REAL.  With our District team of over 4,282 volunteers, along with our 70 clubs, I know that we will MAKE DREAMS REAL for many deserving people, not only in our district, but throughout the world.

District 5110 has a rich history and we want to build on that legacy this year.  We are being challenged to concentrate on increasing our membership, charter new clubs, support the push to raise funds for Polio Plus, and rise to new heights in Foundation giving.  Our major service projects need to relate to child mortality, health and
hunger, clean water, and literacy.  I know that all of you are up to the challenge as we make every effort to MAKE DREAMS REAL and live a life of SERVICE ABOVE SELF.

DG Mike Fischnaller

The Miracle of Rotary

(cont’d)

While the task is still large another article in the magazine describes how Rotarians have helped to eradicate polio in the nation of Bangladesh.  It seems pretty amazing that the disease that so worried our families in the 1950’s and 60’s is now so close to being gone forever.  It’s another great reminder of why Rotarians need to step up when we have our annual Rotary Foundation drive.

The Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say and do:

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
