ROTARY SHARES!

President’s Message

June 11, 2008

Club Transition Time

It is that time of year when leadership in Rotary changes all around the world.  There will be a new RI President and Council, a new District Governor (our own Mike Fischnaller), a new sub-theme that will guide us (this year - Share Your Rotary Story), and new Club Presidents and Board members by the hundreds.

It will be the same with our Club.

Bruce Smolnisky is already deep into planning for his year and his Board.  You will hear much more from Bruce about this in the coming weeks.

It has long been the philosophy in Rotary to depend on volunteer leadership, and changing leadership, to keep Rotary alive and flexible.  At the last District Conference, we heard about the concept of “Friendly Fire” from past RI President, Frank Devlyn.  Simply put, his message was that sometimes present and former leadership in Rotary Clubs can present a challenge to a Club that wishes to change with the times.  The Friendly Fire comes from the older more veteran members of the Club who are more comfortable with the status quo, or even with the “good old days.”

As I listened to Mr. Devlyn, I recognized this phenomena as a natural force in just about any organization that depends on volunteer and changing leadership.  Change can be difficult, but change we must in

News about our Club and Beyond

(cont’d from above)

order to keep pace with the changing world around us.  I believe our Club does pretty well in this category, and I also know that the Club will support the agenda set by next year’s Board and leadership.

This gives me an opportunity to thank everyone who has encouraged me during my year, and who have supported the modest changes put into place by this year’s Board.  I look forward to putting my full support behind our excellent team about to embark on their year in July.

Newsletter Feedback

With the new Rotary year nearly upon us, now is the time to step back and suggest changes to our weekly newsletter.  Do you like/dislike the format?  Do you want to see more or fewer international articles?  More or fewer local articles?  Do you have an idea about something we should include in our newsletter on a regular basis?  Have you seen something in another club’s newsletter we should try?  In short, what do you like, and what can we improve on?

If you have feedback, please send it to Barry Smith at bsmith@thorp-purdy.com or Rod Lathrop at rlathrop@ci.springfield.or.us

Batter Up!

It’s that time of the year again!  July 23 is the Springfield Rotary Baseball Night with the Eugene Emeralds vs. the Tri-City Dust Devils, 6:00 p.m. at Civic Stadium.  The cost is $17 per person, and there will be a special rate for kids.  More details, and a sign up sheet, will be available as the date approaches.  For now, questions can be directed to John Halgren.

The Miracle of Rotary

Come one--come all!

The time of the Fern Ridge charter party has been moved up to allow many district Rotarians to travel home afterwards.  For those who are not able to do that, please seek housing with Rotarians or other friends, since hotel lodging is limited with the Olympic Track and Field trials taking place in Eugene from June 27 to July 6.  The dinner price has been lowered so that all of us can attend.  Come support our newest club, and don’t forget those charter gifts from your club.  Contact Mary Fipps, Mary@wizteam.com, to see what the RC of Fern Ridge still needs.  The official charter date at RI was May 19, 2008.  That’s Mary’s birthday--and well deserved!
