President’s Message
June 4, 2008
Springfield Rotary at the District Conference
Springfield Rotary was certainly well represented at the recent District 5110 Conference in Eugene. From beginning to end, our Club had attendees and leaders making a difference at each session and dinner. We heard from our District Governor, Tim Bewley, on several occasions, and I personally received his best regards for all the efforts we made in the District this past year.
I believe we will see some of the benefits of the breakout sessions in our Club in the next year. It is an important outcome of the Conference - the ability to hear how others are moving their Club and efforts forward. We heard some terrific stories of Rotary doing good in the larger world, and we saw how our District’s Clubs shared their Rotary stories and fellowship through their scrapbooks, auction baskets and other materials in the House of Friendship. By the way, great job on the basket and scrapbook! Our scrapbook won an “Honorable Mention” and I think competed really well with the other Clubs.
The highlight for our Club came at the District Governor Reception and Dinner. Thank you all for attending the jam-packed Reception that was hosted by Springfield Rotary. It was great to see all the support for Mike and for our Club. The Dinner was also well-attended, and the official hand off to our own Mike Fischnaller took place during that event.
I know that you all join me, and our Club leadership, in congratulating Mike. We will do whatever we can to support his year as our District Governor in District 5110!

Chartering Fern Ridge--Gifts are Welcome!
It is the tradition in our district to help a new club get off the ground when it charters, and all district clubs are encouraged to bring or send gifts for the charter party to be held June 28th at the Oregon Air and Space Museum in Eugene.
President Mary Fipps, RC of Eugene Mid-Valley, is serving as the Governor’s Special Representative for our provisional club in the chartering process. She will maintain a gift registry so as to avoid a duplication of gifts--other than cash and club trading banners, which are always welcome. The sponsoring “mother” club, Eugene Airport, will present an engraved bell and gavel, and Eugene Mid-Valley is providing an American flag.
Other welcome ideas include a badge box, podium, blue felt display banner for the club trading banners, sign for outside the meeting site proclaiming the The Rotary Club of Fern Ridge Meets Here, Rotary aprons to use at fund raisers, a club banner and a Four Way Test banner, books of inspiration for moments of reflection, The ABC’s of Rotary, Rotary song books, greeter’s badges and so forth.
Please contact Mary at Mary@wizteam.com with your ideas and to enroll in the gift registry.

Rotary Auction
Thanks to Springfield Rotarians Doris Towery (wine, beautiful handcrafted picture frame) and Liz Degner (handcrafted pearl choker), and to the Convention and Visitors Bureau of Lane County for their donation of items for the ‘Springfield Sampler’ we put forward for the conference auction. We appreciate too the generosity of Karen Hall, KB Designs who donated one of her enticing tie handbags (you’ve seen at our auction!). The winning bid that claimed our package (hope somebody got a pic of it?) was by Ellie Dundee from Eugene Airport for $200.
According the Shirley Buttenhoff, auction organizer, the RC of Jacksonville-Applegate was the club with the highest total bids - $2,000 for their basket including hot air balloon ride, valued at $4,600, and their wine rack with wine that sold for $450.
Thanks, all, for your participation!
