President’s Message

Springfield Rotary - At the District Conference

As you all know, our District Conference is held in Eugene this year.  Our Club Secretary, Micheal Screen, has notified all Club members about the Conference, and more information is available at our District’s website - www.district5110.org.

The District Conference features some outstanding Rotarian speakers including past RI President, Cliff Dochterman during the second plenary session and lunch on Friday, Noon - 1:45 at the Hilton.  The speaker at the first session on Friday, May 30 is another past RI President Frank Devlyn.  That session begins at 9:00 a.m. - again at the Hilton.

If you can attend any of these sessions, or any of the break-out sessions conducted during the Conference, you will not be disappointed.  Please refer to the website for registration information.

CLUB NOTICE:  I am very much urging each and every Club member to attend the Saturday Conference Reception to be held at Valley River Inn beginning at 6:00 p.m.  Our Club is sponsoring that function, and it will mark the changeover from the current District Governor, Tim Bewley, to our own Mike Fischnaller - next year’s District Governor.  It is my hope that a great majority of our Club members attend this free event as part of the Conference and as a way to show support for the District and Mike’s year as District Governor.

Please note that we will not have a Club meeting at the regular day or time that week.  So, no meeting on Wednesday, May 28.  Instead, please, as a Club, attend and support our Reception on Saturday, May 31.

REMINDER
50th Annual Conference of District 5110!

The District Conference is being held this year in Eugene at the Eugene Hilton Hotel & Conference Center and the Valley River Inn from May 29-31 and is proudly hosted by the Rotary Club of Eugene Delta.  District 5110 will be honored by the presence of two past RI Presidents, Frank Devlyn and Cliff Dochterman, as keynote speakers, along with PDG Mohamed Abdulla from Nairobi in District 9200.  The RI President’s representative is PDG Hal Darcey of District 5000, Hawaii.

Conference social activities begin Wednesday, May 28th, with a TRF Donor Recognition Reception.  On Thursday Bert Morris will conduct an afternoon seminar entitled Leadership is a verb, not a Noun, which is open to all.  The Leadership Academy will hold an elegant Tenth Anniversary Celebration that evening while Home Hospitality is offered by Eugene, Springfield, and Cottage Grove Rotarians.  This year’s conference will offer several new and exciting venues such as the House of Sharing and exhibit area, the Scrapbook exhibit and competition, and a Youth Exchange World’s Faire.  There also will be more than ten informative, inspirational and fun breakout sessions.  One highlight of the conference is a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity occurring both Friday and Saturday, interactive forums where You ask the questions featuring our keynote speakers.  They will no doubt question each other as well!

There is something for everyone this year.  Family of Rotary volunteers will offer Rotarians with children free on-site daycare and field trips such as ice skating and horseback riding.  Rotarian golfers will enjoy a friendly tournament on Thursday afternoon, and Rotarian runners and walkers are invited to joint an early Saturday morning fun walk or run from the Hilton along the beautiful Willamette River.  From the Thursday evening Leadership Academy celebration on, EXCITING LIVE ENTERTAINMENT will abound and include live music and the first Rotarian talent contest, auspiciously entitled Rotary Idol.  On Saturday evening at the beautiful Valley River Inn, we will present yet another first-time conference event in District 5110, a symbolic passing of the gavel ceremony between DG Tim Bewley and DGE Mike Fischnaller.  This gala sit-down banquet will be crowned with a choreographed Youth Exchange Talent Show and topped off by dancing to the music of the John Taylor Group.

Pre-conference registration is now over 400, with more registrations expected before and during the event.
