President’s Message

Rotarians Finish Task in Fine Style

It was another day on the trail for nearly a dozen Springfield Rotarians this weekend.  The final weekend of work on our Signature Project found Club members trimming ivy, whacking blackberries and trying to avoid poison stuff in the deep woods.

We will soon send our $15,000 check to Willamalane as the other part of our commitment to make that entry way into Springfield something which we all can be proud of.  For any Rotarian who spent just a little time on the trail, I think they would all agree it is heavily traveled in both directions.  It certainly will set the tone for thousands of walking, running, strolling, biking visitors to our fair city this summer and for many seasons to come.  And now, they will not only enjoy the groomed pathway, the beautiful river, but also the notion that Springfield Rotary has had a hand in bringing volunteer hands and dollars to the project to make it so.

Our commitment began many, many months ago at our Wine Auction - the one before I became president.  I wish to thank, one more time, for all the support I had in those hectic days, each Rotarian who was involved in small and large ways, and for the collective wisdom of the Board to believe that putting our name to a significant project in Springfield each year will go far in making Rotary alive and well in our City.

We will have a “Wrap” meeting of this project soon.  It will be clear then just how much of a “signature” our Signature Project has had on Springfield.  You will be impressed.

Gift of Literacy

Inspiring Readers Through Partnership

The Rotary Clubs of Springfield, TEAM Springfield and many other community organizations have partnered again to inspire a love of reading in Springfield students and encourage literacy in our community.

Through the Gift of Literacy program, every first-grade student in Springfield Public Schools had the opportunity to read a selection of ten books and select their favorite.  On May 22, each student will be presented with a brand-new, hardbound copy of his or her favorite book, a reusable book bag, and educational goodies at the third annual Gift of Literacy celebration held at Lane Community College.

The Gift of Literacy program is made possible through the generous financial, mentor, and volunteer support of community organizations, like the Springfield Rotary, which share the view that literacy is an important part of a healthy community.  Thank you in advance for your continued support!

For more information about the Gift of Literacy program and how you can volunteer, please contact Shelly Ivey at (541) 726-3220.

Survey Report May 21st

Thank you for participating!  Sixty Springfield Rotarians completed the survey about meeting location considerations distributed in April at meetings and via the club’s website.  We will review results and discuss possible next steps at next week’s meeting.

Fern Ridge is about to charter!

Charter papers for the Rotary Club of Fern Ridge (Veneta) were signed Monday, May 5th, and are on their way to RI for review and final approval.  The club is chartering with 20 members and is tentatively planning its charter party on Saturday, June 28th. Many thanks to Helen Lucas, PDG Judi, Cliff Kuhlman, Nelson Maler, Mary Fipps, ME Riley and the sponsoring “mother” Rotary Club of Eugene Airport for their ongoing support in this process.  And above all, thanks to the members of Fern Ridge for believing the time was right to become the 70th club in District 5110.

Look for more announcements soon, and let’s welcome our new club to District 5110 and support them on their way.

Rotary clubs provide emergency shelter, aid to thousands in Myanmar

As the humanitarian crisis worsened in Myanmar’s delta region after a powerful cyclone hit on 3 May, a response team of four specially trained volunteers moved into devastated areas on Thursday to distribute more than 800 ShelterBox containers.

ShelterBox, a grassroots disaster relief organization supported by Rotary clubs around the world, was among the first charities to reach cyclone victims. Desperately needed aid from many other international groups had been stalled at the border for days by Myanmar’s military government.
