President’s Message

Rotary - In the News

I was watching ABC Nightly News this week, when a feature about a young Iraqi boy caught my attention.  His father is an interpreter for the US forces, and he had forged strong relationships with several of the American soldiers.  Their work was important and dangerous.

Sometime last year, the interpreter found out his son, perhaps 8 or 9 years old, was very ill with a major heart defect.  His life was in jeopardy unless swift medical intervention could take place.  Worse yet, there were no facilities anywhere in the country, or in neighboring countries, where this surgery could be undertaken.

The American soldiers began to work to get this boy to America.  It took literally an act of Congress to have the entire family admitted to the States, and for this boy to receive the attention he needed to save his life.

One of the pressing needs was for a non-military group to take in this family, take responsibility for their long stay here, and give all the support needed to make this all happen.  They called upon Rotary, more specifically, the Bethesda Rotary Clubs.

It was great to hear that, and to see individual Rotary members and their families so successfully bond with this family, the soldiers and the boy.  Rotary did its part as it does everyday in the world.

Today, after successful heart surgery, the boy is full recovered and can look forward to a long life.

Please remember, there are no small parts to played in the Rotary world.  In Springfield, help play your part by joining the Club this Saturday for our last day on the Signature Project Trail.

Good weather, good people, good project and a good time guaranteed!

News about our Club and Beyond

What’s in the bag for the District Conference?

Have a look and see for yourself!  There are lots of surprises, and certainly more contents than meet the eye from the outside.

This year we will have two interactive forums with two very different Past Rotary International Presidents—one from California and the other from Mexico--and two very different PDG’s—one from Hawaii and the other from East Africa.  You will have the opportunity to ask questions about Rotary’s past, present and future, where the challenges lie for the organization and the Foundation in the future, and what it’s like behind the scenes to bring and hold together so many different cultures and ethnic groups with so many differing points of view and needs.  After all, the Rotary flag flies in more countries and geographic areas than does the flag of the United Nations.  How indeed do we do it, how will we do it, to remain a vibrant and healthy organization?

To add to our international flavor and substance we will have sessions with a returned and an outbound Ambassadorial Scholar, with our GSE teams to and from Argentina, and with a Peace Scholar from Australia who is now a Visiting Scholar in the Institute of International Studies at Berkeley and a lecturer at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, where he teaches courses in International Relations and US Foreign Policy in the Middle East.  Scott Field is currently preparing manuscripts on the management of Hamas in Palestinian politics, the prospects for democracy in Iran, and the implications for US policy.

All that and more in one bag.  Register now.

This month in Rotary history -- Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland

In May 1914, Rotary clubs in Great Britain and Ireland met in London and agreed to form the British Association of Rotary Clubs.  They elected R.W. Pentland as the first president of the organization, which was to have its own constitution.  The next month, at that year’s Rotary convention in Houston, the International Association of Rotary Clubs recognized the British group as a legitimate extension of Rotary, and clubs in Britain agreed to affiliate with and pay fees to the international organization.

In his convention address, RI President Russell F. Greiner said: “Feeling that we were not familiar with local conditions in Great Britain and Ireland, I strongly favored the forming of an association of the clubs. . . . It has done splendid work in knitting into a closer union the Rotarians of the cities of the United Kingdom.”

The Miracle of Rotary

(cont’d)

Even with limited communication among international clubs during the World War I, the British association managed to keep the clubs in Great Britain, Ireland, and some mainland European communities connected. By 1921, more than 50 clubs were active in the region.

Other historic developments occurred at the 1922 RI Convention in Los Angeles. The International Association of Rotary Clubs changed its name to Rotary International, and a principle was established that allowed any country with 25 clubs to become a territorial unit with representation on the RI Board. At the convention, Great Britain requested and received territorial status as Rotary International – Association for Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI).

No other group in the world had asked for or received this standing when the territorial unit concept was repealed in 1927. Nevertheless, the rights, privileges, and powers of existing territories were forever protected, so RIBI has continued to function as an independent unit of Rotary International, subject to certain conditions under the RI Constitution.

The Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say and do:

  1. Is it the TRUTH?

  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"
