Springfield Rotary.........Not A Fork and Knife Club

For some Springfield Rotary Club members, the phrase “Fork and Knife Club” might not mean anything.  For most Rotarians, however, this is a very familiar description of a Club that meets weekly for a program and a meal together, but that does little else during the course of the Rotary year.

That is not your Springfield Rotary Club.

Today we will hear from Bruce Smolnisky about our most successful Club Auction ever.  I’m sure Bruce will have a lot to say about the event and his team.  What is important to me is that so many of our members were involved.  You were involved in large and small ways.  You contributed to the various parts of the event, attended the event and bid on the great packages offered.  No matter how you helped out, you made a difference.

As a result of Bruce’s work and the work of his team, we will likely have another Signature Project next year.  It will be exciting to see what project Club members choose then.

However, we have an exciting project underway right now - the East Woodlands Trail.  This past Saturday, almost 30 Springfield Rotarians and their guests worked with Willamalane staff to help improve and expand this important trail coming into Springfield.  After the project is completed, we will have a wonderful kiosk-type sign that will let thousands of future trail users that, yes, Rotary is alive and well and busy in Springfield.  What a great commercial for future membership into our Club!

News about our Club and Beyond

NEW ROTARY MEMBER

Let’s welcome one of our newest members, Phil Farrington.  Phil’s bio, in his own words, is as follows:

A native of New Orleans but raised in Texas (Go Horns!), I got lucky when I came to Oregon in 1993.  It’s here that I met my wife Mary, who started the living history program at Dorris Ranch and managed it for about 11 years, and later had our daughter, Claire - now 11 years old.  Its my great good fortune to help develop and implement plans for the Sacred Heart Medical Center renewal project at the RiverBend campus in Springfield, and the University District campus in Eugene.  I also serve on the boards of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce and non-profit Metropolitan Affordable Housing Corporation, and am the immediate past president of the Oregon Chapter of the American Planning Association.  In my spare time I like skiing, softball, hiking, and full contact Scrabble.

Thanks for letting me join Rotary!

Celebrating Our Colleagues

Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others.
Cicero (106 BC – 43BC)

None of us do it alone.  In today’s workplace, we rely on the diverse contributions made by many others.  On April 23rd, Springfield Rotary will acknowledge all the ways our administrative professionals ‘get it done’ on a daily basis!
The Springfield High School Interact Club will help make the day special, presenting the program and honoring our guests by presenting them with flowers.  They’ll tell us about their recent club activities and last year’s Rotary Youth Leadership Academy.  Expect a surprise guest speaker, too!

The Miracle of Rotary

(cont’d)

Please sign up for the two remaining weekends of work so we can keep our end of the bargain with our Club goals, Willamalane and the future.  You will have a lot of fun ..... while getting it done!

These are big events and projects, but all year long, Springfield Rotarians are busy, busy, busy.  Whether it is a fellowship event (such as Ems Night Out or the Rotary Tailgate Party) or supporting our exchange student at a special fund-raising dinner this past week, our Club members make a difference in Springfield, in the world and each others lives.  As I approach the end of my year as your president, I can’t tell you how impressed I am with each Club member, and how proud I am of our Club accomplishments and involvement throughout the year.

Good job, Springfield Rotary!

Dan

The Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say and do:

  1. Is it the TRUTH?

  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"
