President’s Message
You've Had to Be There
We all know what that expression means. "You had to be there" to appreciate........ .....whatever it was. A presentation. A joke. A speaker. Or, a Program. If you are not there, you won't get the benefit of doing so.
Truth is, our Springfield Rotary Club is struggling with attendance. For the reporting period of July-December, 2007, our attendance percentage is just 59.6%. That is almost the lowest in this area with Eugene Emerald at 56.3%.
Of the other clubs our size - Cottage Grove, Delta, Southtowne - we are a full 5 to 15 percentage points lower in attendance. We are over 15 percentage points below the area average, and we are a whopping 35 points behind our area leader - Eugene Airport Club.
So, there are nine clubs in our area, and if you throw in the area average as a straw 10th club, we are ranked 9 out of 10 in attendance.
Not good.
In order to move even to the middle of the pack, we would have to increase our attendance by almost 30%.
So, what is the problem? We have some members who are listed as members that have not been attending at even the 50% requirement. They will be contacted about continuing with our club, or perhaps transferring to another club that would make attendance easier for them.

News about our Club and Beyond |
PRE PETS REFLECTIONS
PrePETS this year was very inclusive! Not only were presidents-elect (PE's) urged to attend, but presidents-nominee (PN's) (or Vice Presidents as some clubs call them) were invited as well. So after we received our 3-ring binder full of goodies and resources and had our pictures taken for the directory, we found our color coded table and had a bit of breakfast.
DGE Mike Fischnaller introduced himself and shared with us the new colors for 2008-09. We asked if the blue was NAVY or and then decided on "DK Blue" in honor of RI President-Elect Dong Kurn Lee. We were then asked to introduce ourselves and share our passions in Rotary. Lots of passions from scholarships to fresh water to involved and committed membership to fun to the potential of Rotary.
Mike also discussed this year's theme, "Make Dreams Real," with its particular emphasis on the health and well being of the children of the world. With water, health, food, and literacy, we can make a huge difference in the lives of many.

Reminder!
Everyone in Springfield Rotary enjoys hearing from all of our members about the paths they took to joining Rotary and their personal highlights and accomplishments since joining Rotary. Many of you have already shared your Rotary story, but a number of our members have yet to do so. If you have not done so, please contact Barry Smith at 747-3354 to schedule a date when you can share your story with the rest of the club. It only takes a minute and there is virtually no prep work required.
Thank you for doing your part to make every meeting a success. |

That, however, is not the entire picture. The bigger picture is that Springfield Rotary Club members do not attend at nearly the same rate as almost all other clubs in our area. And, this has been the case for some time.
Why?
If you think you have the answer, or part of the answer, please let me know. Is it a leadership issue? Location? Program? Your board would like to increase our attendance as a Club. Please let me or any other board member know what we can do.
Obviously, if you are reading this message in today's newsletter, you are probably not part of the problem. However, I would guess you may be part of the solution. Please give us your best thinking, and keep coming to your local Springfield Rotary Club meetings. It is important that you are here!
