ROTARY SHARES!

President’s Message

February 6, 2008

Americans Love “SUPER!”

We Americans are interesting people.  We really like using the word “super” when it comes to parts of life that are writ large, and when it comes to events that celebrate our essence.

A couple of examples of this proclivity to use such a word as “super” have recently been on display.

At the SUPER Bowl we were treated to a SUPER game with a SUPER ending (unless you were a Patriot fan in which case the ending was SUPER bad).  I remember when the first SUPER Bowl was played as I have always been a Green Bay Packer fan.  I wondered then as I do today, can there not be a better term than SUPER to describe this special game?  Evidently, not for Americans.

Then again, last night, we all paid some attention to SUPER Tuesday, a day during which almost 10 million Americans voted in 24 states.  That is a grand exercise of democracy, and at least this year, seems to be truly an exciting SUPER day.

Of course, the origin of the word is SUPERLATIVE, an adjective that connotes excellence - the pinnacle of success.  We Americans just get right to it and say, “SUPER!”  And, everyone knows what that means.

In light of a great football game, and in light of the wonderful, rowdy and very American way we choose our leaders, I would have to agree that these recent major facets of our American life truly have been SUPER.

District 5110 Mid Year Meeting

District 5110’s annual Mid Year Meeting was held at the Village Green in Cottage Grove Saturday, January 26, 2008.  It was preceded Friday afternoon and evening by an Assistant Governor meeting, the District Executive Committee dinner and meeting, and a wonderful Leadership Academy dinner and fellowship.

During Saturday morning’s plenary session, chaired by PDG Judi Beard-Strubing, DGE Mike Fischnaller reported on the International Assembly he and Marlee attended in San Diego from January 13-20.  He brought with him the new theme banner Make Dreams Real, reflecting RI President-Elect Dong Kum Lee’s pledge to keep our promise to eradicate polio and his own emphasis on reducing the rate of child mortality worldwide.

Our District Rotary Foundation Committee Chair (DRFCC) Steve Uerlings spoke about The Rotary Foundation’s New Vision plan, still in its early stages, and about his hope for our district to be a participant as it moves forward.  Then in a lively session DG Tim invited committee chairs and past district governors to share their work and thoughts this year.

For the next several hours separate groups met to continue training, the Leadership Academy with Mark Dennett, the assistant governors with Julie Manning, and key committee members with Heidi Henry, all of whom did an excellent job.  The governor line met with the past district governors who comprise the District Advisory Committee until mid afternoon.  All in all a very productive day with lots of good photos lost when District Secretary Carol misplaced her camera.  It is yet to be found!

The Miracle of Rotary

This month in Rotary history:  Rotary’s Anniversary

During the first Rotary club meeting on 23 February 1905 in Chicago, Paul Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Hiram Shorey, and Silvester Schiele met to talk about their personal experiences.  Harris then unfolded his general plan for their club meetings.

This was the simple beginning of the world’s first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago.  It was created because of Harris’ wish to capture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth.  The Rotary name derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members’ offices.

Rotarians continue to take pride in their history. In honor of that first club, Rotarians have preserved its original meeting place, Room 711 in Chicago’s Unity Building, by re-creating the office as it existed in 1905.  For several years, the Paul Harris 711 Club maintained the room as a shrine for visiting Rotarians.  In 1989, when the building was scheduled to be demolished, the club carefully dismantled the office and salvaged the interior, including doors and radiators.  In 1993, the RI Board of Directors set aside a permanent home for the restored Room 711 at RI World Headquarters in the Chicago suburb of Evanston.
