ROTARY SHARES!

President’s Message

January 23, 2008

Time to Reboot your Rotary Commitment

That’s computer talk for giving our efforts - as a Club and as individual members - a restart in this New Year.  To reload, to refresh to restart, to re..... whatever it takes to support two really important Springfield Rotary Club efforts that are just before us - the Rotary Wine Auction and our Membership Goals.

THE ROTARY WINE AUCTION:  Bruce Smolnisky is off to a great start for this year’s event.  He has done some excellent pre-planning by securing our date - MARCH 14 - and our site - VALLEY RIVER INN - and our auctioneer - SID VOORHEES.  He has also identified the committees and individuals needed to make it the best Wine Auction ever.  Please sign up to attend the event if you have done so, and please either bring wine or make a donation for good, quality wine as soon as possible.  Those are easy to take care of today.

If you have donated to the Live Auction in the past, or if you have been a supporter of the Silent Auction, please consider doing so again.  Those committee Chairs will soon be before the Club asking for your support.  It would be good to get out in front of these two efforts as soon as possible.  Identifying the items we will be offering our guests that night drives the printing of our Auction Book and a lot of other activities for the evening.

Remember, this is the event for our Club for the year.  We have had four successful Auctions in the past, and Bruce’s will be the best one so far --- with all our help.

MEMBERSHIP GOAL:  As set by our Board at this year’s Retreat – “Net 8 in ‘08” - a worthy goal that

News about our Club and Beyond

Rotarians seek aid for victims of violence in Kenya

Residents of Kenya need humanitarian aid following the 27 December election that sparked violence across the country.  More than 650 people were killed, and more than 250,000 are displaced.  Many of the displaced are staying in camps within the Rift Valley and Western Kenya, while others fled into neighboring Uganda and Tanzania.

Immediate needs include blankets, cooking fuel, food, health care, mosquito nets, plastic sheeting, shelter, and water and sanitation.  Because of continued violence in the streets, many people have been unable to buy food or go to work.  It’s anticipated that long-term recovery efforts will involve reconstruction of houses and buildings and the continued provision of food.

Kenyan Rotary clubs need financial contributions.  Because of the difficulty in routing donated goods, cash donations only are requested at this time.  Rotarians are partnering with the Kenya Red Cross Society to provide hands-on assistance.  A committee of Rotarians in Nairobi has been established to oversee disaster relief activities.

The Miracle of Rotary

(Cont’d from page 2)

that would grow our Club to almost 100 members.  Earlier in the year I mentioned what I saw as the kinds of new members that would make our Club stronger.  They are folks you know, whose company you enjoy and ethics you admire.  It is certain that the next 10 new Club members are people you know today.  That is the only way Rotary works.  So, please invite those folks to a meeting soon.  The Membership Committee will soon have some time at the podium to report progress so far in reaching our goal, and steps we need to take before the end of the Rotary year to achieve our goal.

It is certain, however, that our Membership goal WILL be reached if you – each of us - begin today to have someone in mind you can and will bring to a Club meeting soon.  Stay tuned for more details from the committee.
President Dan

The Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say and do:

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
