President’s Message

Polio Update

The lead story in this quarter's Rotary World announced a partnership between Rotary International and the Big Foundation - the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.  The goal of the partnership is to raise funds to finally eradicate polio in the world.

Here is how the partnership will work.

The Gates Foundation has forwarded $100M to RI in the form of a challenge grant.  RI will need to raise a matching amount in the next three years bringing the total to $200M in the effort to end polio forever.  This grant and partnership mark one of the largest challenge grants given by the Gates Foundation, and is the largest single grant ever received by RI.

The first $100M will be spent by RI within one year in direct support of immunization activities carried out by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, spearheaded by the World Health Organization, RI, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and UNICEF.  Polio continues to exist in Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, and Pakistan.  By the numbers, polio cases have been slashed by 99% worldwide, but, as long as one case remains (as with Smallpox), it continues to be a real threat.

There are a lot of big numbers, big organization, and big people involved in this effort.  But, Bill Gates takes time to thank and acknowledge the real power in making this disease finally cease to exist on earth - the individual Rotarian through their commitment and generosity.  “The extraordinary dedication of Rotary members has played a critical role in bringing polio to the brink of eradication.”  And, as Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair, Robert Scott remarks, “Rotarians worldwide have worked very hard over the years to reach this point, and it is rewarding to see our approach validated in such a significant way by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.”
If you have given just a penny to the effort - thanks.  The end is in sight.President Dan

Rotarians In Motion....Sharing at the WCS meeting last Saturday

Sixty-five Rotarians from all over District 5110 gathered at the Phoenix School in Roseburg Saturday, January 12, to update the status of fifty-five international service projects and to propose eleven new ones.  Good January weather helped to make this a new record in attendance at our district’s most well established service committee.

Beginning the Rotary year with $229,846 in DDF (District Designated Funds) available, $88,620.71 remained to be allocated at the meeting Saturday.  The ten proposed projects were all approved, and many received additional funding from representatives of clubs in attendance who believed in the value of projects proposed by others and who wanted to support their efforts.

As Nancy English said, “….this is what it’s all about.”  Notable in attendance were representatives of the provisional Rotary Club of Fern Ridge, which has gained five new members because of its efforts to do an international WCS project.

Among the approved projects:  Water filtration systems for 1164 rural families in Guatemala, initiation of a tilapia farm above Colima in Mexico as well as four water filtration systems for schools there, furnishings for an orphanage in Kenya as well as for a solar system for the orphanage, equipment of a library in South Africa, medical equipment for a cancer center in Kamchatka, Russia, and for a remote village clinic on the Turkey-Georgian border.  District Rotarians are invited to go on a trip to the last site at the end of August this year.  (Contact Carol Fellows at fellowscfl@aol.com for more information.)

Rotary clubs team up with explorer to distribute books in Africa

Rotary clubs in South Africa and the United States have joined with explorer Kingsley Holgate to give books to children in 33 African nations.  Holgate and his team are distributing mobile libraries - beige trunks with the Rotary emblem that contain books and pencils - to schools and libraries during their yearlong trek around the rim of Africa.

The books come from a literacy project called Books for the World, which provides reading and writing materials where they’re needed most.  In 2007, it shipped 19 containers from Houston to Johannesburg, each one weighing 42,000 pounds and packed with at least 50,000 books.

The Miracle of Rotary

Polio-survivor returns to India to immunize children

After learning about Rotary’s commitment to polio eradication, polio survivor Gautam Lewis was inspired to travel from his London home in December to his birthplace in India, where he helped immunize about 75 million children under age 5 against the disease.

Born in Kolkata in 1977, Lewis was abandoned by his mother by the time he was 3 years old, after he had contracted polio, a crippling and potentially fatal disease that’s still endemic in Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan.  He was taken to Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity, then adopted and relocated to London.

Lewis went on to work in the music industry and has managed many high-profile bands, including the D4, the Hives, the Kills and the Libertines.  Fulfilling his childhood dream, he also qualified as a pilot in September.
