Gaining a New Perspective –
The Hard Way
Early on Monday morning, my business computer crashed. To be more accurate, I (operator) drove my computer to the cliff of destruction, and with one keystroke over the edge and into the abyss of Nothingness. It is called “re-formatting” your hard drive. That sounds like a good fix when your computer will not boot up, right? The problem here is that by “re-formatting” you basically erase all information previously located on your hard drive - which for me was about 12 years of file build-up. I suddenly (it really took a few minutes to wipe all that data out - I watch it happen before my eyes) had a pristine computer with absolutely no history, no files, no email addresses, no memory of ..............me.
Yikes!
I had heard horror stories of this happening to individuals and entire offices. I had imagined “what if this happened to my computer”, but, no, that could never happen.
But, it did. Now what? Is this the end? There was no way to retrieve even a shred of former information from my hard drive. No way. I'm dead in the water.
Before long, however, a strange sensation came over me as I pondered what to do to fill up 8 hours of work - without touching my keyboard.
And that sensation was one of ........discovery. I calmed down and realized that this was going to be a brand new experience for me. What happens when you have to reconstruct your whole persona, work history, file history, contacts? What did you lose that was vital to your work and to yourself? What was junk?
It was kind of cool. It is cool to find out what really matters, what baggage was along for the ride on my computer, what I had wrong all the time, and how to make it better (my computer) in its new life. I had a disaster, but the reconstruction was going to allow me

Rotarians in the News
Last week, two Rotarians were featured in the news.
BILL SPIRY: Bill wrote an article about the Springfield Education Foundation and the great work it does.
MIKE KELLY: Mike was featured for his new consulting business and volunteer work.

Lloyd Thomas
It is with great sadness we report that Lloyd Thomas passed away on December 3rd after turning 90 earlier this week. Lloyd was president of the Springfield Rotary Club in 1981-1982, a Paul Harris Fellow, and active in Club activities until health issues made it impossible for him to participate. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Jane and to his children, including our own John Thomas, and the rest of the family. |
It is official! Mike Fischnaller declared DGE!
In the absence of a challenging nomination by the established date, November 26, 2007 (MOP 2007, Article 13, 13.020) it is my privilege as District Governor to declare Mike Fischnaller the District Governor for the year 2008-2009. (For those who read the MOP closely, Mike is officially the DG Nominee until the RI Board votes its approval at the next board meeting).
Once again the District Governor line is complete in District 5110. We are all committed to succession and continuity in district leadership for the ongoing support of our clubs. The DG line is having its first retreat December 4, and we have plenty to talk about! Please let me know if you have any ideas or concerns we should be addressing.

(Con’t from page 2)
to do things I’ve wanted to for a long time.
I had always wanted to clean up the literally thousands of files that accumulated on “My Documents” over the years. All gone now. I had wanted to verify and correct all those old and inaccurate emails that came up each time I sent out a mass email. Well, now was my chance as I put in my first and only contact on the “re-formatted” hard drive.
I was starting over, and though there is a lot of work to do, it was ok.
What does this have to do with Rotary? Nothing. But, here is what I’ve learned.
1. Anything can happen - and it can happen to you.
2. It is never as bad as it seems.
3. There is opportunity in every disaster.
4. Always have an external hard drive connected to your computer, and back up your files each night!
Am I glad that I lost all that history, all that information? No. Just making the best of it.
